Learner Motorcycle Insurance
Protective Gear makes sense for all riders - especially learners.
Learner Motorcycle Insurance - these kind of riders can be good and bad news to an Insurer - which means Good or Bad news for you! First the Good News: The growth in the motorcycle industry is mainly with middle-aged Baby-Boomers who are attracted to riding for many reasons - perhaps they always wanted a motorcycle but never had the chance. The tremendous growth of Harley Davidson over the last 20 years has been due to middle-aged riders identifying with the All-American, H-D appeal and lifestyle. Novice middle-aged riders are much more likely to be mature and responsible on the road and aware of potential danger - so they are very likely to take an MSF Training Class or series. As a Learner, Motorcycle Insurance companies like you as a low-risk rider!
Now the Bad News: On the other hand a 20 year old learner rider on a superbike is statistically much more likely to be involved in an accident that results in an insurance claim. Speed, youth and inexperience. You can see that it's reasonable for risk to be reflected in premiums directed to those who are likely to need to claim.
As a Learner, Motorcycle Insurance companies do not like you as much - hence the higher premiums!
Options for Young Riders: Young riders can reduce their premiums by taking an accredited Training Course (like MSF), and riding a lower risk bike, having a larger deductible. Up Your Deductible! If you take the first $500 or $1000 of a claim (that is considered our fault), then you will make a big improvement in your premium. So for motorcycle insurance young riders, its a case of damage limitation until you build some experience and history. You can help yourself a lot by choosing a lower rated bike that is perhaps a bit older so you candrop the comprehensive cover - and last but not least saty out of trouble with the Law!Learner motorcycle insurance is the same, and usually the premium risk is higher with young riders, as older learners know what the consequence both in personal and financial terms of picking a fight with a truck while riding a bike! ------------------Learner Motorcycle Insurance------------------
Who's Fault is it anyway? Talking of fault, this raises the very important issue of making sure you are held not liable in the case of an accident where you are not at fault (see insurance claims section). No-one can be expected to come along and say "I'm very sorry, its all my fault - and here is a letter to confirm it'. You need to get written confirmation, witnesses, photos - even for obvious cases - as when the reports get filled in by everyone in a couple of weeks, facts have a habit of being distorted to suit the writer.
My 2 cents? As fas as a learner motorcycle insurance goes, take as high a deductible as you can. If you think about it, this is like you are self-insuring that portion. Banking on the fact you will not wreck. This can also have a subtle effect on your riding style and approach. This way you will have to pay for a minor spill, but you know the Insurance company is there for a catastrophe. That's really what insurance is for. Also if your bike is over 10 years old, ther's a good chance you do not need Comprehensive cover (which covers theft and fire risks). A side benfit to taking a big deductible, is that it can give the Insurance Company confidence in you. At a time where Companies are dropping some kinds of cover due to high claims - it makes sense to stand out as a Good Responsible Rider.
