Motorcycle Insurance Checklist

Motorcycle Insurance Selector Checklist

General Questions when selecting or applying for insurance.

There is no perfect answer for everyone, as we all have different needs and requirements of service from our Insurer. So this page provides some thoughts for you to make your own motorcycle insurance checklist.

First, decide whether you want to deal with someone face-to-face, who can answer your questions about premiums and levels of coverage – and if you have a claim they can help you fill out your claim form.

Local Agent
National carriers like Progressive, Allstate & McGraw etc have local agents.
TIP! You can easily get an online quote here – so that you know how much you are looking at. Once you have your quote, you can print it out and take it to the Agent who will review it with you. This saves time for both of you.

Online
Like it or not, we're all doing more business online. And the best businesses have great web interfaces, which make it easy and intuitive to do business. I am really impressed with Progressive’s Web Site and experience, for instance. Geico has a good reputation for direct sales and many happy customers.

This is obviously cheaper, as there's no agent to pay - and this is often passed on to the customer in lower premiums. But it could also include more festures and coverage.

Checklist of things, this is a random list to provoke thought!

  • Local or National?
  • Can you get a good reduction by increasing your deductible?
  • Do you need Collision coverage
  • Is roadside recovery included or available?
  • What Multiple Bike discounts do they offer?
  • What are the limits for annual mileage, commuting, business use.
  • Is Mexico & Canada coverage included, or available?
  • Do they ask where it is stored at night (ie a locked garage) – this will be cheaper
  • Do they ask about security, alarms, immobilizers etc?
  • What impact does violations have on the premium (did you remember to list them when you completed the application?)
  • Speed of processing a claim – local office or Head Office?
  • What is their policy about accessories and clothing (some companies include a fixed value automatically) – can you add/increase the value of accessories?
