Damage you might do to someone you collide with – this can be their motorcycle or other vehicle; or house etc. Also this includes personal injury that may occur to others. This is liability.

You have to have Liability to ride on the street. Its the law, and it makes sense. But how much coverage you need depends on your own situation.

For Example:

If you run into a NFL football player and put him out for a season, he’s going to sue you or your insurer for injury and lost income. But if your net worth is $100,000 then the standard policy amount of around $1,000,000 would probably be OK. But if you're worth $3m – then you need more Liability Cover.

The beauty(?) of the US Insurance/Legal system is that lawyers like to look for deep pockets to sue (those with lots of $$).

So the answer is, think about it -if you think your assets could be at risk, get the advice of an agent who knows your financial circumstances.

The above is a hopefully rare and extreme case, but normally the Liability side of your coverage takes care of the cost, worry and hassle of putting people's vehicles and property (plus their medical expenses) right if you have a wreck. Sounds a good deal to me!

But a final, friendly warning! If you have minimum coverage and have a big wreck involving lots of vehicle and people damage - the chances are you are going to max out your coverage. If you have money of property assets - they're gonna come after it!
