Motorcycle Insurance - an overview

Motorcycle Insurance is a neccessary expense of riding a motorcycle on the road. And it is a Really Good Thing! Its purpose is to provide a facility for compensation to others if you run into them and cause damage or injury. You can also elect to provide for compensation to your own bike or body! Well, that's the simple view - like most things in life, its actually more complicated than that as the Government and States chose to make laws specifying that for the good of society, everyone has to be insured when driving. There are minimum levels of coverage required to cover at least basic claims.Of course in the USA, any insurance claim is expensive once legal fees and medical costs are involved. You can reduce the premium for your motorcycle insurance by taking on part of that risk yourself: - Taking a higher deductible
- Taking lower medical coverage (only OK if you already have a good health plan through your job etc)
- Riding a smaller or older bike
- being an older rider in a low risk area.
So this is how insurance works in a very basic way. As well as the above factors that affect your premium, you have many options about where you get your insurance - either a local broker or agent, or one of the many online companies. There are some excellent specialist motorcycle insurance companies like Progressive, and also companies like Allstate who cover homes and cars etc - so you may be eligible for a multi-policy discount. To find out more, browse through the pages on our site - we know this is a complicated technical subject, but we are keeping to simple overviews to give you a basic picture.
