Sport Bike Insurance
Tips and Sources

Protection is an investment for Sport Bike Riders. Our page sponsor Actionstations has a huge range of top quality gear.

ActionStations Body Armor Protection

Sport Bike Insurance.

Statistically, sportbikes or crotch rockets as they're also known are much more prone to accidents than any other kind of motorcycle.

Developed to resemble race track bikes these are immensely powerful- some able to hit almost 200mph. Just like asking a thoroughbred race horse to trot all day, these bikes and riders are often tempted to exploit some of their immense performance. When this exceeds the rider's ability or the traffic conditions - a very big accident involving great lost can result. This explains why sport bike insurance tends to be considerably more expensive than say, a cruiser.

A couple of points to note here regarding Sport Bike Insurance and modifications.

  1. Any customizing that affects the value - like wheels, bodywork etc, should be declared to your insurer - otherwise it's not likely to be covered, as they insured a standard bike.
  2. Any modifications that affect performance should be declare for the same reasons (especially if it is visible!)
  3. Any modifications that affect the legality for the road in your state
  4. Any modifications that could affect or impair handling in normal road conditions
  5. Realistically a claims inspector looking at the remains of your bike is unlikely to know what was standard on your bike and what was aftermarket (unless he is a motorcyclist!!), but I am a pessimist in this kind of situation - if an insurance company is on the hook for a multi pillion dollar medical and liability claim, you can bet that they are going to look pretty hard!

Let's be clear here - I'm a sport bike and road racing nut - the real fun of these bikes starts when you start to modify it. But all sport bike owners must be aware of the potential here for an insurer to deny a claim if you give them a reason.

Track Days and Racing Insurance
It's covered elsewhere on the site - but if you are a Road Racer or take part in Track Days you may be interested in insuring your bike for the track. Yes it is possible!
Your street insurance specifically excludes racing, speed tests etc....and yes it seems they do find out! So for a reasonable sum you can cover your bike in case you become another casualty of the Corkscrew!

Similarly it is possible to cover out and out Race Bikes - whether it's Matt Mladin's Yosh Suzuki which is worth half a million, or your 999 Ducati at twenty five grand.
But this cover is NOT included (or available as an extra) on your normal Sport Bike Insurance Policy.Click the tab for full details

Shameless (but relevant) commerce....
I've owned motorcycles all my life, well at least since I was 13. But Road Racing and sport bikes have been my obsession.

So I'm a street rider. And also, while my business is about protection and safety, and I'm often reading gruesome reports of wrecks - for me,
riding on the street is about Blue Jeans!

I understand, and respect the riders who suit up in their Aerostitch or leathers every time they swing a leg over the saddle. But for me Levi's epitomise the free-wheeling casual culture that is motorcycling!

But as we get older (I'm now 51), somehow my knees start to feel exposed - they feel Oh-so-close to that hard road as I lean into a turn......

So this explains why I, and thousands of our customers each year, are absolutely hooked on my Bohn Adventure Pants. These are basically cool lycra Long Johns with comfy, tough armor on the knees, hips thigh and tailbone. No-one can see I have them on, and I can wear them all day long without feeling hot or uncomfortable.

If you're at an age where your knees are feeling vulnerable like mine, you might want to check 'em out HERE.
